At 3pm UK time this afternoon, at an event in New York with simultaneous happenings in Toronto, London, Paris, Dubai, Johannesburg, Jakarta and Delhi, BlackBerry has unveiled BB10, the software which RIM promises will put the most sophisticated apps in the hands of its customers. Our flagship Apps – SyncLion and Bord – are among them and already waiting for Z10 and Q10 users in BlackBerry App World.

MeeGo’s second life thanks to Jolla

Amazing news from Finland. Ex-Nokians from the MeeGo team decided to continue work on the project under the Jolla Mobile company. Not much know about it yet, except twitter. Waiting for comment from Nokia. Will they be blocking the growth of their barely-born child ? Hopefully not. If the choice for Nokia is Windows Phone, let be it. Just let others evolve something really unique. Made in EU.

Great news from RIM. Outstanding UI SDK for upcoming devices is available now: http://devblog.blackberry.com/2012/05/blackberry-10-cascades-available-now/. Everything is based on QT/QML – cross-plarform framework from Nokia. What a irony! Years of development in Nokia and when other competitors strongly believe in Qt ecosystem, Nokia believes otherwise. Check also our presentation about porting Qt applications for BlackBerry PlayBook. It’s very likely, that many MeeGo/Symbian applications will be ported to BB10. What about joint venture between Nokia and RIM ? Could it be better choice for Nokia than Microsoft ? Time will tell.

QT-based Raspberry Pi officially Launched

Great news for QT enthusiasts and fans of community projects. Raspberry Pi, ultra cheap Linux-based computer is officially launched: http://www.raspberrypi.org. Why this information is important ? It’s a great opportunity for educational projects, cheap computers with great QT-based software (OpenGL animations, great fluid UI) and decent hardware capabilities (graphics accelerator, HDMI, etc.) as well as many interesting embedded solutions. So, stay tuned, nice concepts from Trismer Technologies soon!

QT everywhere

The ecosystem of QT is quietly growing. Great example is Necessitas, mature and active port for Android. But there are other projects, quite promising too:

QT for Blackberry: https://github.com/blackberry/Qt/downloads – officially supported by RIM for the upcoming devices (tablets and smartphones)

QT for iPhone: https://qt.gitorious.org/~ianfromafrica/qt/qt-ios-plaszma – haven’t tried it yet, but looks promising (except legal issues of LGPL and Apple App Store)

QT SDK 1.2 Released

Lots of goodies for Qt developers, especially Qt 4.8 (only for Desktop at the moment) and Qt Mobility 1.2. We are impressed how fast Qt project team is working on new versions and updates. Let’s hope there still will be high priority on updates and improvements to the Qt Mobility API in future. Today it’s the hardest part to port to different platforms (mostly because of lack of common API). Nokia created new field for Qt – mobility. Don’t miss it. Beautiful UI delivered by QML is not complete without stable and efficient access to gallery, contacts, messages, etc. In the ideal world, maybe in a half year we will see unified mobile APIs for Symbian/MeeGo/Android (thanks to Necessitas) maintained by the Qt project.

Apple Reports First Quarter Results

Amazing results in the Apple’s report. New record of iPhone sales and revenue. It’s a great news for Apple.

- Is it a great news for Apple’s products users ? Most likely

- Is it a great news for 13-year old workers who build iPhones in China for 70 cents an hour (http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-child-labor-2012-1) ? Probably not

How about Europeans ? Do we find it as a threat to our IT and mobile economy ? With death of Symbian (and in some way MeeGo) we lost last European mobile OS. Now “wars of ecosystems” is actually just a war of US companies. We admire how fast these ecosystems grow, partially thanks to us. Wouldn’t we be proud if we could watch some European ecosystem that grows in the same way (as Nokia some time ago) ? What about future ? Is it really not important to us that probably everything we search for, buy, watch will be delivered by companies far, far away from us ? Music, advertisements, context-ware information, books, movies, probably anything you can make money on. Aren’t you scared, in times of crisis, that you will support markets totally not connected to your region ? One of the factors of US success is that American people support their national products. They know how to build big brands using money of their society. Very clever. Unfortunately we Europeans seem to ignore it. More over, we criticize anything we build.
